EpiPhotonics started a joint project with OA Laboratory and Keio University to develop optical Layer 1 switches for data centers under contract with NEDO. EpIPhotonics develops larger port count nano-second response optical switches which will be controlled by SDN so that power consumption will be significantly reduced.

EpiPhotonics has developed a 20 ns speed PLZT 8x8 optical switch and 20 ns speed PLZT Variable Optical Attenuators (VOA) which are the fastest available in the industry. (Press release)

EpiPhotonics developed the lower-loss electro-optic PLZT waveguides for nano-seconds speed optical switching. The new switch will be shipped from 2012 spring.
